Matt Smook

Winnipeg, Manitoba

My name is Matt Smook.  I started triathlon in 2008 after recovering from a seriously broken leg.  I could barely run 5km or swim 100M.  In my first season, I won my age group for the province of Manitoba for the sprint distance, and placed in the top three the following year.  I have completed numerous sprint distance races, as well as a half iron distance race, and several half marathons.  I'm not a fast runner, but I enjoy it.  I'm an Air Force pilot, father of two kids under age three, and currently doing a university degree by distance learning.  I enjoy training, even though I don't always feel like getting out of bed early some days (we all have those training days!).  I took a break from triathlon over the past few years as life got very busy with my flight training, but now I am back at it full-on, and currently training for sprint and half iron distance races this year.  I love being part of the triathlon community.  Its an atmosphere where athletes cheer for other athletes.  It is the only sport I can think of in which race winners often come back to congratulate the last Finisher.  Everybody helps each other with training tips, making "newbies" feel welcome, and often making lifelong friendships.
