Lorel Hammerstad

Edmonton, Alberta

Lorel is an age group triathlete from Edmonton, AB who has competed in various distances from sprint to half iron since 2009, as well as three marathons and six half marathons.

Born and raised in Flin Flon, Manitoba, where any lake is just 10 minutes away, she’s a natural at swimming.  Lorel took up running in her adult years but in 2006, she was bitten by the triathlon bug while watching her husband, Marc Bessette, race Ironman Coeur d’Alene.

After being diagnosed with Celiac Disease this year, Lorel took some time off from longer distance endurance training to adapt to the new diet.  But her “never quit” attitude kept her motivated enough to keep up her fitness.  She finished the Calgary half marathon, placing 60/116 in her division, and placed 7th out of 19 in her age group at the STARRT sprint triathlon in St. Albert, with a finishing time of 1:35.

Lorel also organized a relay team for the River’s Edge Ultra in Devon, AB at the end of September, affectionately named "Team Chafing the Dream” (including fellow Ambassador, Lindsay Osborn and her husband, Joe), who did a great job for first time trail runners.  Official time for the entire team was 11:03 hours, placing 16/24 in the team category.

Finally adapting to her new life change, Lorel claims race season is not over!  She’s running the MEC Race 7 10km in October and is once more participating in the Heroes’ 5km Run on Veteran’s Day in Palm Springs (hoping to place 1st in her age group again).

Goals for 2017

Lorel will be revisiting old passions and pursuing new challenges. She’ll be at Calgary 70.3 for the 3rd time next summer and aims to add some trail running races to her repertoire thanks to her positive experience at River’s Edge this year.  She manages to fit her training around a full time job and other passions: cooking, travel, watching scary movies with her dog and hanging out with her husband, Marc, (who hates scary movies).
