Icebreaker's premium merino fibre has been created by nature: merino sheep in the harsh environment of New Zealand's Southern Alps grow this protective coat which allows them to withstand extremes of heat and cold. Icebreaker realized that science can't design a better fibre, so they turned nature's merino into an all-season clothing system that we can use to protect us from our own sometimes harsh climate.
Icebreaker is perhaps best known for its base layer pieces that can be used as a base layer for any winter sport or activity but, over the last 5 years, Icebreaker has delved into the realm of more specifically technical athletic performance clothing with the introduction of their GT group. The original multi-purpose GT pieces like the Chase Zip are now in the Multisport group. Icebreaker now has specific run and bike pieces in their GT Run and GT Bike groups.
By now, in late October, I've been wearing something Icebreaker for every outdoor bike or run workout in the last month and every single piece has proven itself more than once but nothing opened my eyes and impressed me more than the long sleeve top I wore a few weeks ago. I was doing a long brick workout - a 3 hour ride followed by a 2-hour run. The ride started out cool but calm and got warmer and warmer as the sun gathered some steam. As over dressed as I might have been by the end of the ride, the breathability of the wool prevented that stifling, over-heated feeling from setting in. It was so warm by the end of the ride, though, I thought I'd put on a light weight polyester dryfit top. The weather, though, had other ideas about co-operating, though. By the time I got outside for the run, light clouds had covered the sun and didn't show any sign of moving away. I went right back in and changed into a long-sleeve Icebreaker run top and headed back out. And it was perfect from the start: not too warm, not too cool. A little more than an hour later, a light mist started to fall and I was happy to be heading into the last half of my run. As mist turned into a light rain, I noticed wet spots on my shirt but I was still warm. By the last 15 minutes of my run, it has rained enough that rain was dripping off my had and my hair was full on wet and dripping as well. My Icebreaker shirt by now was almost soaked through but I realized it was still keeping me warm and it didn't feel wet.
I've been telling people how this stuff is supposed to work but this 5 hour workout was the first time I'd seen Icebreaker perform at all levels and throughout a range of weather conditions. This stuff is the real deal and it will always be a staple in my run wardrobe. You owe it to yourself to give it a try!
